Overview Dimensions

Hella Jongerius, 2006
"Form follows feeling" – this is the creed that Hella Jongerius adheres to in her design work. Indeed, “The Worker” is appealing thanks to the strange interplay within it of handcraftsmanship and technological elements. The craft-like, rustic feel of the armchair is the product of the compact seat upholstery which almost seems overly low, and the base frame, left visible, which is reminiscent of a half-timbered structure. By contrast, both the lathed wooden armrests and the polished aluminium arc stand for modernity and contemporary technology. The choice of upholstery fabrics plays a key part in defining The Worker’s appearance. The seat and backrest come with different cover fabrics, whose textures and colours are carefully fine-tuned to complement each other.
Specifications
Solid oak frame and armrests, cast aluminium armrest bridge; seat cushions: polyurethane foam and polyester batting, chamber cushion with microfibre filling.

Manufacturer

Vitra has manufactured furniture designs by Charles & Ray Eames and George Nelson since 1957. Building on this foundation over the years, the company has developed a wide range of furnishings for the office, for the home and for public spaces in collaboration with progressive designers.

Yet Vitra is more than just a design-oriented manufacturing company. The name also stands for the Vitra Design Museum, for a collection of modern furniture and its accompanying archive, for workshops and publications on topics of design, and for an architectural concept that unites buildings by Frank Gehry, Nicholas Grimshaw, Zaha Hadid, Tadao Ando, Alvaro Siza, Herzog & de Meuron and SANAA at the Vitra Headquarters in Birsfelden (Switzerland) and on the Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein (Germany).

Designer

Hella Jongerius, born 1963 in de Meern, Netherlands, studied design at the Industrial Design Academy in Eindhoven. She subsequently attracted international attention through her work for the Dutch design label Droog Design. She taught at the Design Academy in Eindhoven from 1998-99, serving as head of the department Living/Atelier from 2000-04. In 2000, she founded the design studio JongeriusLab in Rotterdam, where she creates, produced and markets many of her designs primarily dishware, vases, textiles and furnishings. Hella Jongerius' work often blurs the borders between design and handicrafts, or art and technology. Along with Jasper Morrison and Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, Hella Jongerius has made major contributions to the steadily growing Vitra Home Collection.
